Bengal man kills wife with axe over suspected affair, attempts suicide after confessing to police

A 28-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her husband in Bagdah’s Kolagram area of North 24 Parganas on Sunday morning. The accused, identified as Prosenjit Biswas, allegedly attacked his wife, Arpita Biswas, with an axe inside their home. After the incident, he reportedly called the police to inform them about the murder and then attempted to die by suicide.

Police said the couple had been married for about seven years and had a five-year-old daughter. Arpita was reportedly active on social media and used to create videos. Sources stated that she had come in contact with many people through these platforms. It is alleged that she often received phone calls at night, which led to frequent disputes between the couple.

According to police and local sources, Arpita was in the kitchen when Prosenjit allegedly saw her speaking to someone on a video call. Acting on suspicion, he brought an axe and attacked her. Arpita died on the spot. Following the incident, Prosenjit called the local police station and confessed to the murder, police confirmed. He then attempted to hang himself but was stopped by local residents who had rushed to the scene after hearing the news.

Bagdah police reached the spot, detained Prosenjit, and placed him under arrest. The body of Arpita Biswas was recovered and sent for post-mortem examination. Police have begun an investigation and are recording statements of family members and neighbours. No official statement has been made regarding whether prior complaints were filed by either party.

Prosenjit’s elderly mother is reportedly in shock after the incident. Neighbours said they were unaware of the extent of the tension within the household. Police presence in the area has been increased as part of the investigation process. Further legal procedures are ongoing.
